What Is Situational Awareness?

Self defense, or survival, involves much more than just “techniques”. You must understand how the body reacts to fear. You must understand the nature of stress.   You must also understand that if you react to a situation as soon as it gets physical you have reacted too late. You must Pre-react, you must first size up the situation.

In my definition Situational Self Defense involves looking at any given situation and imagining what might or could take place.   For example , if  I am walking in the park, I must anticipate someone hiding behind trees, or running up on me.  I don’t necessarily need to look out for enemy combatants lobbing grenades.

We must train ourselves to be alert and see potential dangers. This is our first line of defense.

As a life guard, I was constantly taught to scan my areas.  We didn’t want to get fixated on one specific person or area. We scanned.  As we saw things like a small child wandering from his mothers reach, or a younger swimmer following better swimmers into deep water, that is when we as guards made changes on our focus.  We would get into position to stop the toddler from falling in, or move closer to someone who may have an issue in the deep.  Most of the time everything was ok, but at least we were ready in case the worst happened.  Sometimes all it took to keep someone safe was a loud whistle.

Most of the time we may find that nothing happens, and even question our perceptions.  Does that mean that we were wrong.

NO!   How many times have you avoided someone dangerous.  You will probably never know, unless you are not aware of your surroundings and then, you probably will not have avoided the danger.

Be aware of people as you go in and out of stores,  make eye contact.   Be aware of corners and bushes and places one could hide or even pull you into, to hide their crime against you.

Don’t be afraid to tell someone to “STAY BACK”, it you don’t feel comfortable with them.  Just like the life guards loud whistle, it may keep you safe.  They may go home with a great story to tell about a crazy person they saw on the streets today, but you will also go home safe.   The one time that you don’t react to your intuition may be the last.

Stay aware of your surroundings and be safe.  Your Family depends on you.
