What Effect Do Apocalyptic Films And Television Shows Have On Prepping?

We have been asked this question by the folks over at NatGeo in preparation for their upcoming new film American Blackout which premiers right before the new season of Doomsday Preppers. While this is a loaded question because the answer truly depends on who you ask, we will try to answer this as objectively as possible. So lets get down to business.

With NBC’s Revolution and NatGeo’s Doomsday Preppers and Doomsday Castle, there has been much more attention brought to the preparedness lifestyle in which some may  now call a movement. But not all the attention has been positive. I have to be honest here, even though there have been more events such as Prepper conventions and trade shows, there has also been a growing concern that the government is targeting folks who claim to be “preppers” due to the fact they stockpile a large amounts of food and weapons. While I still believe that our great nation is the land of the free, others don’t feel the same way.

I will say that people are more aware now that they need to be self sufficient when it comes to disasters, etc., and it is about a 50/50 split amongst the general population on their agreeing with being a prepper or not. Some will say it is great and they either have started to prepare or need to. Others will say that preppers are nut jobs who stockpile guns and ammo for the apocalypse. As they say, the court of public opinion can make or break anything. We have discussed the reality television shows like Doomsday Preppers and just like anything else, it has its pros and cons. It is up to you on what you take away from it. Remember, any disaster scenario is possible and we just had one close call with our own federal government shutting down. Again, you have to decide what is important for you and your loved ones.

Movies such as World War Z and The Road are thought provoking at best. While one deals with zombies, the other deals with a reality that we hope to never experience. This is almost like one of the choose your own adventure books you read as a child where you made choices that would affect the outcome of the story. The same goes for prepping, you choose what is best to stock up on, or what skills to learn. While there are basic skills everyone should have a firm understanding of, the rest is up to you. Could you learn something that may save your life or a loved ones life from watching American Blackout or Doomsday Preppers? Absolutely!

So set aside some time or program the DVR for these upcoming shows. I am a firm believer in learning and education, to whereas you may take something away from this season and hopefully every episode. In the end, if you don’t learn anything new, it may be some good entertainment for the evening. Have fun and stay safe out there.
