Long Term Food Storage

With all of the recent events in the U.S. such as the earthquakes, hurricanes, flooding, etc., people have become more aware of their lack of disaster preparedness.  While we mostly discuss everyday carry items, we must not turn a blind eye to preparation and survival. Please note that I am not an expert in this area or claim to be.  But we have researched some of the long-term food storage information and wanted to share it with our readers.

The first and most important step in the process of gathering food for you and your loved ones is to read and make a plan before heading to the store or ordering products online.  There is plenty of information on the Internet which may be overwhelming at times, but will provide you with a foundation for your plan.  You will need to take into consideration the number of family members you will provide food for and the length of time you will be storing the food.  There are prepackaged kits for one to four people which could sustain you from 72 hours to 1 year.  The shelf life even varies from 7 years to 30 years, with freeze dried foods lasting the longest.

Long Term Foods

Keep in mind that we are not talking about end of the world or apocalyptic preparation; we are referring to natural disasters which could have an impact on your area receiving food, water, power, and fuel for weeks at a time.  I recall reading somewhere that grocery stores may only have approximately 3 to 4 days worth of food in stock.  While I cannot validate this information; I do believe it to be true as we have seen the grocery store shelves after people have cleared them in preparation for an upcoming storm.  Even during the Super Bowl, the grocery store sometimes has difficulty meeting demands. So before the next natural disaster approaches, stock your shelves.
